What is Domain Rating (DR)?

Domain Rating is a metric from Ahrefs, scored on a 0–100 logarithmic scale, that estimates the overall strength of a website's backlink profile relative to every other domain in Ahrefs' index. It's driven mainly by the number and quality of unique referring domains and external backlinks pointing to a site — links from each reputable linking domain carry more weight, and because the scale is logarithmic, each additional point gets harder to earn as DR climbs.

DR is an Ahrefs metric, not a Google ranking factor — alongside site-level metrics like Ahrefs Rank and page-level metrics like URL Rating, Google doesn't publish or use a public authority score. A higher DR does not mean higher keyword rankings, more organic traffic, better content, higher legitimacy, or greater trustworthiness; it is specifically a backlink-profile metric.

The DR scale is logarithmic, so increases at the higher end represent progressively more relative backlink strength driven by high-quality backlinks. DR numbers also should not be compared blindly with domain authority metrics from other tools: different indexes, crawl coverage, update schedules, and methodologies can produce different values.

Why check Domain Rating in bulk?

Checking domains one at a time doesn't scale once you're auditing a site, vetting outreach targets, or comparing a handful of competitors. Common uses for a bulk checker:

How this tool works

Paste up to 100 domains or URLs, one per line. The tool normalizes each entry (stripping protocols, "www", and trailing slashes), removes duplicates, and queries Ahrefs' public Domain Rating API for each unique domain in parallel. Results come back sortable by rank, domain, or DR score, with a live average across your batch, and can be exported to CSV.

To keep this a free, reliable tool for everyone, checks are limited to a fair-use rate per hour rather than a hard paywall. If you hit that limit, wait for the next hourly window and try again.

Frequently asked questions

Is Domain Rating the same as Google's ranking algorithm?

No. DR is an Ahrefs metric built from their own backlink index. Google does not publish or use a public "authority score," and does not use Ahrefs' DR directly in ranking. DR is best treated as an industry-standard proxy signal, not a Google ranking factor.

What counts as a "good" Domain Rating?

It depends on your niche and who you're comparing against — there's no universal cutoff. In many competitive niches, DR 40+ is considered a solid, established site, and large mainstream publishers or platforms often sit well above 70 as high-DR websites. The most useful comparison is against your direct competitors, not an absolute number.

How many domains can I check at once?

Up to 100 domains or URLs per check. Paste one per line — bare domains and full http(s) URLs are both accepted.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes. It's free, with a fair-use rate limit per hour so the service stays available and fast for everyone.

How is DR calculated?

CheckDR does not calculate DR. It retrieves the metric from Ahrefs' public Domain Rating API.

Does CheckDR need an Ahrefs account, API key, or login?

No. Visitors only enter domains; no Ahrefs account, login, API key, or other credentials are required.

Does CheckDR store the domains I check?

No. Submitted domains are not written to a database. Temporary IP-based request counters are used for hourly rate limiting.

Is CheckDR affiliated with Ahrefs?

CheckDR retrieves Domain Rating data through Ahrefs' public Domain Rating API.

How often does DR change?

DR can change as Ahrefs' backlink index and calculations change; there is no fixed interval at which every domain must change.

Why might two SEO tools show different numbers?

Different tools, such as Moz, can use different indexes, datasets, update schedules, and methodologies, so their authority-style numbers may not match.

Does a high DR mean a site is trustworthy?

No. DR is a backlink-profile metric, not a general trust, legitimacy, or content-quality score.

How current is the Domain Rating data?

Each check queries Ahrefs' API directly and returns their current DR for that domain, so results reflect Ahrefs' live index at the moment you run the check rather than a cached or delayed snapshot.
